Easy DIY Valentines Bookmarks

I decided early on that I would not be making Valentines for my child’s class. We would do them together! So over the years I have devised several easy DIY Valentines which Bambino has been able to make — sometimes with some help.

I absolutely love these cute bookmarks. They can be made from items already around the house, and they are useful! They won’t just end up in the recycling bin, but hopefully will be tucked into books for months or years to come. They are perfect for early readers!

Materials

Heavy paper (card stock, crafting paper)
Scissors
Bone Folder
Tape or glue
Sharpie
Materials for decorating including washi tape, stickers, doilies, etc.

Note: I used paint chips to make these bookmarks. That’s what I happened to have around the house. But don’t go raiding the paint department to make these! You can use card stock, scrapbooking paper, or any paper you have around the house.

How to Fold the Bookmarks

Cut your paper

Cut your paper to a rectangle shape. Mine are 4.25” x 2.75” — you can cut 8 of that size from an 8.5” x 11” sheet of paper. Just fold the sheet into 8 sections and then cut.

Fold #1

Fold one short end across at a right angle to line up with the long end of the rectangle. Use a bone folder to make the fold crisp.

Fold #2

Fold the other short end across — again at a right angle to line up with the long end of the rectangle. Use a bone folder to make the fold crisp.

Secure the Seam

I used stickers, but you could use tape, glue, washi tape — whatever you have on hand to hold it all together.

Decorate!

Use your imagination — or better, yet, let your children use theirs! See below for some decorating ideas if you need some inspiration

Use your Bookmark

Just slip the bookmark over the corner of a page to mark your spot in a book.

Give them away!

I think two together makes a great Valentine! Let your children decorate them. They will be precious — cuter than mine are! And use what you have around the house. I used washi tape, doilies, markers, and stickers. But let your kids write and draw on them. They will make for lovely and useful Valentines!
