DIY Wood Sign with a Cricut

how to Make a Wood Sign with Vinyl & a Cricut

I made my first wooden sign for my grandmother. She needed a way to let visitors know not to let her cat escape from her apartment. The sign I made is a little silly, but it gets the job done, and she loves it. Since then, I have made a few others for various places around the house, and I’ve learned some tips and techniques that make making wooden signs a lot easier. So whether your signs are functional, decorative, or seasonal, this tutorial shares all my favorite tips and tricks. It’s done in real time, too, so you can create yours right along with me.

I created this project as part of the Mid Modern Mudroom Makeover for the One Room Challenge, but the technique is super easy, and it’s something anyone can do for any room of your house! As part of a series of live DIY projects for Amazon, I also created a live tutorial during Prime Day. The video takes you through the process step-by-step and can be used with any graphic you create!

These wooden signs make great, inexpensive gifts for all kinds of people on your list: teachers, home decor enthusiasts, kids, parents working from home — and so many more!

Materials

A Note about Cricut Machines: these projects could absolutely be done on other Cricut machines. I happen to have the Maker and the Maker 3, but I know many of you out there have hardworking Joy and Explore machines, too. Use what you have! The principles are the same.

A Note about Wood: your wood should be sanded well and then dusted and cleaned. This technique can be used on painted and stained wood, too, but be sure you test it out on a scrap before applying your iron or EasyPress. Too much heat can melt the finish and ruin the project.
