Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast

A few years ago Bambino wanted to be Lumiere, the candlestick from Beauty and the Beast. It was then that I discovered the magic of the unitard.

Materials:

I cut the foam into strips to make the cuffs and hat using my child’s measurements. I then covered the foam with the white fleece and added the lame as trim on the cuffs. I sew, so I did this all with my machine. But you could also just hot glue everything. And the gold lame trim was probably unnecessary in the end.

Then I cut a circle out of the cardboard to fit very snugly inside the top of the hat ring. I made it a little big so that it pushed the top of the ring out giving it a conical shape. I spray-mounted a circle of white fleece to the cardboard. Then I took a few sheets of the red and yellow acetate and made flames which I stapled in the center of the cardboard circle. Then I inserted the cardboard circle into the top of the hat.

We also added a white hood cut from a shirt that was too small. It was not necessary in retrospect, and he ended up taking it off.

I painted the gloves with the red and yellow paint, and voila! Lumiere was complete!

Here’s my biggest tip: start with a basic unitard. They are inexpensive, come in a ton of different colors, and you can add lots of different pieces to them to create different looks. Plus: they are fun for dress-up after Halloween! Another option I love: Primary Pajamas. They come in great colors, and your kids can wear them to bed afterwards!
