While most of these were Halloween costumes, they certainly can inspire dress-up play all year round! We have an extensive collection of open-ended costume pieces including scarves, hats, gloves, large pieces of fabric, and simple pants which are easily mixed and matched and transformed from one occasion to another. As you build a dress-up wardrobe, rather than buying specific costumes, consider adding a few pieces like this which allow for open-ended, imaginative play rather than being very specific costumes for one type of play.
The foundation of most of these costumes is a simple unitard which provides coverage, warmth, and lots of color. I have built each costume around the unitard with simple, flexible pieces — largely from items we have around the house or that are easy to find. And while these are costumes for Bambino, they are adaptable for adults and kids, families, girls and boys, men and women, even couples.
I enjoy sewing, but I know that many people don’t sew — or don’t have time. Where possible, I have included ideas for turning each project into a no-sew costume, too. So if you are looking for a last-minute costume idea, check out our family costume gallery.
